World No. 8 Casper Ruud will face home hope Taylor Fritz in the fourth round of the US Open 2024 on Sunday, September 1. The Norwegian began his journey in New York with a straight sets win over Yunchaokete Bu. He then needed four sets to get past veteran Gael Monfils.
Ruud encountered his biggest test of the tournament in the third round and staged a comeback from two sets down to beat Shang Juncheng 6-7 (1), 3-6, 6-0, 6-3, 6-1. He has now advanced to the fourth round here for the second time in his career, and for the first time since his runner-up finish in 2022.
Fritz has been in pretty good form thus far and hasn't dropped a set in his previous three matches. He defeated Camilo Ugo Carabelli in the first round, former Wimbledon runner-up Matteo Berrettini in the second round, and Francisco Comesana in the third round.
Fritz has made the fourth round here for the second year in a row. He will now aim to match his best showing in New York by reaching the quarterfinals. The American has advanced to the second week of all Majors this season, becoming the first player from his country to do so since Andre Agassi in 2003.
Ruud has a perfect 2-0 winning record against Fritz and won their most recent encounter at this year's French Open in straight sets. However, that was on his preferred surface, and the American could turn the tables on him this time and will have the support of the home crowd as well.
