Coco Gauff backs Michelle Obama’s critique of Donald Trump’s abortion policies, ahead of 2024 Presidential Election against Kamala Harris
Coco Gauff showed support for Michelle Obama’s message regarding Donald Trump’s approach to abortion policies. Obama’s concerns, laid out during a speech at a Kamala Harris rally in Michigan, warn of the implications of restricting "reproductive care", which she fears may expand if Trump returns to the office.
Obama’s message, posted on her Instagram, cautioned about the "chilling effects" of dismantling these healthcare systems "piece by piece," warning that further bans on abortion and restricted telehealth services could create "medical deserts" across the country.
Addressing the risks women could face, Obama painted a stark picture, suggesting that women and their families could suffer severe impacts, from restricted gynecological care to dangerous pregnancy complications.
Obama asked Americans not to "put our lives in the hands" of those who fail to fully grasp the "broad-reaching health implications" their policies would have.
In a show of support, 20-year-old Gauff reshared a segment of Obama’s Instagram post on her story.
During his presidency from 2017 to 2021, Trump supported policies limiting abortion. Notably, he now stated that abortion policies should be determined by individual states. During the October vice presidential debate, the 78-year-old took to X to clarify his stance on a federal abortion ban, asserting he would "veto it."
"Everyone knows I would not support a federal abortion ban, under any circumstances, and would, in fact, veto it, because it is up to the states to decide..."
"Really incredible to see how far this country has come" - Coco Gauff on seeing Kamala Harris on the ballot
Coco Gauff expressed her pleasure at seeing Kamala Harris, a person of color, on the ballot at the presidential elections this year. Ahead of her US Open campaign this year, she stated, via New York Post:
“It’s really incredible. No matter who you’re voting for, who you stand for, it’s really incredible to see how far this country has come [for] people of color, black people.”
“It’s really inspiring to see someone on that ballot. Honestly, it takes the works of many others to pave the way and I’m excited that I’m able to see this in my lifetime because I know many others didn’t get that chance to,” she added.
The American tennis star also recently fulfilled her "duty" and voted at the Palm Beach County in Florida. She followed in the footsteps of fellow former US Open champion Andy Roddick and his wife Brooklyn Decker.
