Coco Gauff will face reigning Australian and US Open champion Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals of the Wuhan Open 2024 on Saturday, October 12. The American defeated Magda Linette 6-0, 6-4 in the quarterfinals to extend her winning streak to nine matches.
Gauff arrived in Wuhan on the heels of a title at the China Open, her second at the WTA 1000 level as well as her second of the season. She also officially qualified for the WTA Finals with her win over Linette. This will be her third straight appearance at the year-end championships.
The 20-year-old failed to advance beyond the group stage in singles on her debut in 2022. She reached the semifinals last year and lost to Jessica Pegula in straight sets.
Where is Coco Gauff playing?
Gauff is currently competing at the Wuhan Open 2024, and it is her tournament debut as well. This is the first edition of the event since 2019 as it was on hold due to the pandemic restrictions and logistic issues.
Venus Williams is the only American champion in the tournament's history and claimed the title here back in 2015. Alison Riske-Amritraj is the only other American player to reach the summit clash and did the same in 2019.

Gauff will take on World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals. The latter is the two-time defending champion and hasn't lost a match at the venue in her career. She beat Magdalena Frech 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinal clash to extend her unbeaten run in Wuhan to 15 matches. She also ousted Yulia Putintseva and Katerina Siniakova in the previous rounds.
Gauff leads Sabalenka 4-3 in their rivalry. The latter won their most recent encounter which took place in the semifinals of this year's Australian Open. The American youngster won their meeting before that when they battled it out for the US Open crown last year.
