Comebacks in Basel and Madrid, Wimbledon with no COVID restrictions: A day to celebrate for Federer, Nadal and Djokovic fans
Fans of Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer all had reason to celebrate on Tuesday, albeit for different reasons.
Nadal confirmed that he would be returning to action at Madrid following a five-week layoff, while Djokovic will be allowed to defend his title at Wimbledon with the easing of COVID restrictions. Federer, meanwhile, announced that he would be competing in Basel later this year, potentially making it his comeback event.
Federer confirms participation in Basel
Federer, who has been sidelined for close to a year following knee surgery, has signed up to compete at his home event in Basel in October. The Swiss had earlier announced his participation at the Laver Cup in September.
Federer last played a professional match at Wimbledon in July last year where he suffered a shock 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-0 loss to Hubert Hurkacz. Federer later underwent an operation on his right knee – the third in a span of one-and-a-half years.
Fans on social media could not contain their excitement at Federer's announcement.
"The king has returned," one user wrote.
Another user posted a GIF of three people rejoicing with the caption, "We RF fans right now."
Nadal to make return in Madrid this week
Nadal will return to action at the Madrid Masters this week after being sidelined for five weeks due to a rib stress fracture he incurred in the final at Indian Wells.
The 13-time Roland Garros titlist made the announcement on his Twitter account.
"Despite having a short preparation and facing a difficult event, I can't wait to play at home, where we don't have many chances to do so. I'll try to do my best. See you in Madrid!" said Nadal.
The Madrid Open also welcomed the return of its five-time champion.
Nadal's supporters were understandably thrilled with the news.
Djokovic set to defend Wimbledon title as COVID restrictions ease
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic's vaccination status prevented him from defending his Australian Open title in January. But the Serb will be allowed to defend his Wimbledon crown after organizers confirmed that vaccinations will not be mandatory for entry.
Djokovic has played sparingly this year and most recently featured at the Serbia Open, where he lost to Andrey Rublev 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-0 in the final.
