"Cringeworthy broadcast, the Coco Gauff bias was insane" - Fans outraged by Chris Evert's 'despicable' commentary for Emma Navarro's US Open 4R win

Coco Gauff's shocking loss in the fourth round of the 2024 US Open has been accompanied by fans' frustration with Chris Evert's commentary during the clash. Evert has been accused of being unfairly "biased" towards the 20-year-old, even though she was up against fellow American Emma Navarro.

Navarro dashed Gauff's hopes of a successful title defense at the New Major with a thrilling 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win. The 20-year-old did herself no favors with her subpar performance, recording 60 unforced errors, including 19 double faults. Fans were not only dismayed at the World No. 3's underwhelming display but were also incensed by the commentary during the riveting encounter.

After facing backlash for her commentary during Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka's matches earlier in the tournament, Chris Evert came under fire from tennis fans yet again for her remarks during Emma Navarro and Gauff's fourth-round meeting at the US Open.

Fans denounced the 18-time Grand Slam champion's "despicable" commentary, accusing her of being "painfully biased" in favor of Coco Gauff, despite her being on the losing side.

"Cringeworthy broadcast performance by Chrissie Evert. The level of Coco bias was insane. It’s one thing when only one American is playing, but you’d think there’d be a little support for Navarro," one fan commented.
"Honestly despicable. I commented this in the live thread, but at one point Evert literally made a disappointed noise when Emma hit a good shot during a long rally. She couldn’t bring her self to say Emma was playing well, only that coco was playing poorly (but don’t count her out!). It was painfully biased," a fan argued.
"@ChrissieEvert you know Emma won right? Absolutely disgusted at your bias. You have no place behind the microphone," another fan chimed in.

Fans further criticized Evert's commentary as "disrespectful" towards Emma Navarro, questioning how she still had a job calling matches.

"I don't know how Evert has a job still. Pathetic commentator, adds absolutely nothing and just says 100% fluff and usually only for one player," one fan wrote.
"Please send Chris Evert home. At this point it’s disgusting," a fan remarked.
"1000 percent agree. Extremely irritating, very disrespectful to Navarro. And it's been even worse in some cases, with other players. She needs to either not call Coco Gauff matches or go completely,"
"She had no business winning this match after that many double faults. She really needs to fix her serve. The ESPN commentators were so biased to Coco it was nauseating," another fan posted.

Following her win over Coco Gauff, Emma Navarro will continue her stellar US Open campaign against Paula Badosa in the quarterfinals. The Spaniard secured a clinical 6-1, 6-2 win over Wang Yafan to book her place against the World No. 12.

The highly anticipated encounter will mark the duo's second meeting on tour. Badosa emerged victorious in their sole previous match at the 2024 Italian Open, beating the American 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.

If Navarro manages to level their head-to-head in the quarterfinals, she will face second seed Aryna Sabalenka or the winner of the match between Donna Vekic and Zheng Qinwen in her maiden Grand Slam semifinal.
