Daniil Medvedev breaks 5-match losing streak against sick Jannik Sinner to reach 2nd Wimbledon SF in a row

Jannik Sinner's 2024 Wimbledon campaign came to an end in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, falling to Daniil Medvedev. The Russian has now reached his second semifinal at SW19 in a row, matching his best run at the tournament.

The opening set saw both players start aggressively on the serve, with neither facing a single break point until 6-6. In the ensuing tiebreaker, the Italian edged ahead to draw first blood at 7-6(7).

In the second set, however, misfortune struck for Sinner. Looking suddenly sluggish, he fell behind by a break and lost the set 6-4 to the Russian. It was more of the same in the third set, as the World No. 1 lost an early break and trailed 1-3.

Complaining of dizziness, Sinner soon opted for a medical time-out that lasted more than 10 minutes. The break appeared to have halted Medvedev's momentum, as he surrendered the lead to force a tiebreaker again. This time, the World No. 5 edged past his opponent, taking the set 7-6(4) to move within one set of the semifinal.

The fourth set was strangely one-sided, as a lapse in concentration from Medvedev handed Sinner the comeback on a silver platter. Converting both of the break point opportunities he got, the 22-year-old broke serve twice in the set to take it 6-2 and force a decider.

WIth all to play for in the final set, it was Daniil Medvedev who got the first break, as he converted his third break point opportunity to open up a 3-1 lead on the defending Australian Open champion. Although Sinner threatened to equal in the next game, the Russian held strong to consolidate the lead. Serving at 5*-3 for the match, the former World No. 1 made no mistake, sealing the win in four hours on Center Court.

The head-to-head between the duo is now 7-5, as Daniil Medvedev finally broke a five-match losing streak against the Italian with the win.
