Denis Shapovalov's 'proud' fiance Mirjam Bjorklund sends loving message to Canadian after he ends 5-year ATP title drought at Belgrade Open
Denis Shapovalov's fiance Mirjam Bjorklund lauded the Canadian on his triumph at the Belgrade Open. The 25-year-old won the ATP 250 title in the Serbian Open, which was his first singles trophy in five years.
Shapovalov had to go through the qualifying rounds to reach the main draw of the Belgrade Open, beating Frenchmen Constant Lestienne and Hugo Grenier. The Canadian started his main-draw campaign with a hard-fought 6-7(6), 7-5, 6-1 win over Marton Fucsovics and followed it up by beating Nuno Borges 6-2, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals.
Here, he beat Christopher O'Connell 6-2, 6-2 before registering another comprehensive win over fourth seed Jiri Lehecka (6-2, 6-1) to reach the final. Denis Shapovalov faced Hamad Medjedovic in the title clash and produced a fine performance to register his fourth consecutive straight-set win and clinch the Belgrade Open.
This is the 25-year-old's second ATP singles title, with his first coming at the Stockholm Open back in 2019. He was presented with the trophy by Novak Djokovic.
Shapovalov's fiance Mirjam Bjorklund took to Instagram to send him a heartwarming message on his Belgrade Open triumph. She shared a video of Djokovic presenting the trophy to the World No. 78, and her caption read:
"My Champ."
Bjorklund shared another story which she captioned:
"Proud."
Shapovalov and Bjorklund have been together for a few years and got engaged in July 2023.

Denis Shapovalov helped Canada reach the knockout stages of the Davis Cup Finals by winning each of his singles matches during the group stages. He beat Francisco Cerundolo, Eero Vasa and Dan Evans, all in straight sets.
Canada will next face Germany in the Davis Cup quarterfinals and the winner of the tie will face either Spain or the Netherlands in the semifinals.
Shapovalov has won 26 out of 48 matches so far in 2024, with his most notable performance being his victory in Belgrade. Before this, he reached the quarterfinals at the Swiss Indoors in Basel. The Canadian also made it to the last eight of the Citi Open in Washington.
Shapovalov is next scheduled to join the Canadian team during the Davis Cup quarterfinals.
