Devastating news for Caroline Wozniacki ahead of Australian Open 2025
Caroline Wozniacki has served her fans with devastating news ahead of the 2025 Australian Open. In a shocking turn of events, she has withdrawn from the tournament, marking her absence from the first Grand Slam of the year.
Wozniacki made her return to tennis in 2023 after reversing her retirement decision, which she had made in 2020 following a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis and her marriage to basketball star David Lee. However, she did not play further after the US Open last year, where she was eliminated in the fourth round by Beatriz Haddad Maia.
The Dane was granted a wild card for Melbourne, where she had planned to bring her kids, Olivia and James, after her father Piotr's numerous complaints about not receiving wild cards. However, her name has now been removed from the tournament's entry list, confirming she will not participate.
The reason behind Caroline Wozniacki's withdrawal remains unknown, as she has not commented on the matter. It remains to be seen if and when she will reveal the reason in the near future.
"I'm grateful for wildcard and having the opportunity to compete again at Australian Open" - Caroline Wozniacki
Caroline Wozniacki was granted a wild card to compete at the Australian Open, alongside six Australians: Kimberly Birrell, Olivia Gadecki, Taylah Preston, James Duckworth, Marc Polmans, and Adam Walton. She expressed her gratitude for the opportunity in a conversation with the media, sharing that she had many great memories in Melbourne.
"I have so many wonderful memories of Melbourne, and of course winning the Australian Open is an all-time career highlight. Melbourne's one of my most favourite cities in the world, and I can't wait to share it with my family and my kids," she said.
"It's obviously a tournament I feel extremely comfortable at. I love the balls, I love the court, and I love the fans," she added.
Wozniacki added that she was hoping for a warm welcome from the fans when she returned to the city.
"And I hope that I get a nice welcome back when I see everyone there - and I'm sure I will; it really is a special place. I'm truly grateful to everyone for the wildcard and having the opportunity to compete again at the AO in January," she said.
The Dane is a former champion of the tournament, having won her first Grand Slam there in 2018, where she defeated Simona Halep in the final.
