Dominic Thiem suffers straight-sets defeat to Quentin Halys at Estoril Open
French tennis player Quentin Halys caused a major upset at the Estoril Open by beating two-time Grand Slam champion Dominic Thiem in straight sets.
After winning two matches in the tournament, Thiem faced Halys in the quarterfinals but struggled to keep up with the 111th-ranked player.
Halys, who is not known for his clay court skills, proved his doubters wrong by displaying impressive baseline tennis along with his strong serve.
The match started off disastrously for Thiem as Halys dominated the first set, winning it comfortably 6-1. Thiem attempted to make a comeback in the second set, but Halys continued to apply pressure with his serves and strong returns.
Despite facing two break points, Halys managed to save them both and clinched the second set 6-4, securing his spot in the semifinals.
Quentin Halys' performance was impressive, winning 84 percent of his first serve points and only losing four points after his first serve. Dominic Thiem, on the other hand, struggled to find his rhythm and make an impact on Halys' game.
The Austrian player has had a difficult year so far, struggling with injury and loss of form, and the loss to Halys only adds to his woes.
Overall, it was a stunning victory for Halys and a surprising exit for Thiem at the Estoril Open.
