13th seed and New York native Emma Navarro will square off against 26th seed and an in-form Paula Badosa in a blockbuster quarterfinals clash at the 2024 US Open on Tuesday, September 3. The winner of this encounter could face either Aryna Sabalenka or Qinwen Zheng in the semifinals.
Navarro kicked off her US Open campaign with a couple of convincing 6-1, 6-1 victories over Anna Blinkova and Arantxa Rus in the first two rounds. Her first real challenge came in the third round against 20th seed Marta Kostyuk. Navarro, however, triumphed after a tough battle, winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
Navarro then pulled off a major upset by defeating defending champion and fellow countrywoman Coco Gauff in the fourth round, with a score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
Badosa started her campaign in New York with an emphatic 6-0, 6-3 victory over Viktorija Golubic in the opening round. In the second round, Taylor Townsend put up a tougher challenge, but Badosa improved as the match progressed and eventually secured a 6-3, 7-5 win.
Badosa faced another stern challenge in the third round against Elena-Gabriela Ruse and even saved one match point en route to a 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (8) win. Badosa made light work of Wang Yafan in the fourth round, dropping just 3 game en route to a 6-1, 6-2 thrashing.
Navarro and Badosa have faced off in professional competition just once before, with the Spaniard winning 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the second round of the Italian Open earlier this year.
