Emma Raducanu issues statement after withdrawing from Hong Kong Open, days after expressing desire to compete "as soon as she can"
Emma Raducanu announced her withdrawal from the Hong Kong Open, citing a foot injury. The tournament is slated for 28 October - 3 November 2024, at Victoria Park, Hong Kong.
Ahead of this withdrawal, the British player also pulled out from the China Open, which was scheduled from 25 September to 6 October in Beijing. The reason behind her consecutive withdrawals from the tournament is the injury she sustained during her match at the Korea Open against Daria Kasatkina on 21 September.
Raducanu had to retire early from the match after playing just the first set. She initially took a medical timeout but eventually had to withdraw, citing an injury in her left foot. The Russian won the match with a score of 6-1. Since the incident, Emma Raducanu has not been able to come back to the court.
Raducanu shared a statement before the China Open where she announced her withdrawal from the tournament and expressed her desire to compete as soon as she could. She wrote:
"Hello, last week in Seoul I sprained some ligaments in my foot which unfortunately need some more time to heal. It means i can’t play in Beijing but I hope to be back competing as soon as i can."
Following this, the 21-year-old has now shared an official statement of her withdrawal from the Hong Kong Open as well. She took to X and penned a note stating the reason behind her missing out on the tournament. The tweet read:
"Hellooo, I’m sorry to say that I will not be able to play in Hong Kong next week. Whilst my foot is making good progress, I need a little more time before I am match fit. I hope to be able to come back and play this tournament in the future! In the meantime, I am doing what I can to be ready for BJKC."
Emma Raducanu opened up about the lessons she has learned after her injury at the Korean Open
In an interview with Women's Health, Emma Raducanu opened up about the lessons she had learned after getting her left foot injured in the Korean Open. She said that she has learned what 'non-attachment' is and realized that everything comes and goes. She spoke about the significance of being in the present, as quoted by dailymail.co:
"There has been a lot of volatility over the past three years,’ she admitted. ‘And I think the most I’ve come into myself has been in the last few weeks. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is non-attachment; acknowledging that everything comes and goes," said Emma Raducanu. "Every moment is fleeting, and how you interact with the present dictates how you feel, the quality of your work, the quality of your relationships, and how much the people around you enjoy being with you."
Raducanu further spoke about her mindset with the injury and revealed that she has "matured a lot" in the last few weeks. She said:
"I've taught myself not to label things as black or white. For example, with this injury, I’m trying to catch myself and stop labelling it as like, “Oh, I’m so unlucky, this is so bad.” I’ve learnt to accept things and reframe them. I’m not completely unable to exercise, so I’ll still do things like yoga or Pilates – low-impact exercise, so I’m focusing on that. I’ve matured a lot in the last few weeks, to be honest."
Emma Raducanu also faced an unfortunate experience at the 2024 US Open, as she had to turn back from the first round after losing to Sofia Kenin with a score of 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.
