Emma Raducanu off-season update: Brit heads to Auckland to kick off 2025 at ASB Classic

With the 2025 season just days, Emma Raducanu is off to Auckland to play her first tournament of the year. The British No. 1 will compete at the ASB Classic in Auckland alongside several other top names on the WTA Tour.

Emma Raducanu has struggled with injuries since her US Open triumph in 2022 but played considerable tennis in 2024. While she endured injuries to her foot and back, the Brit played 13 tournaments on the tour and finished the season as the World No. 57. She will now eye more progress in 2025 and begin her season at the 2025 ASB Classic.

Raducanu's new fitness coach, Yutaka Nakamura, has shared an update with fans regarding her next season and posted a picture from the airport before leaving for Auckland for the WTA 250 tournament. In the picture shared on Friday, the 22-year-old is seen with Nakamura and head coach Nick Cavaday.

2025 will be the third year in a row that Emma Raducanu will begin her season at the ASB Classic. At the 2023 ASB Classic, the Brit defeated Linda Fruhvirtova before losing to Viktoria Hruncakova in the second round. In 2024, Raducanu again exited the competition in the second round. She defeated Elena-Gabriela Ruse but lost to eventual runner-up Elina Svitolina.

Emma Raducanu will not be the only high-profile name at the 2025 ASB Classic as the main draw field at the WTA 250 tournament will also boast the likes of Noami Osaka and Simona Halep. Four-time Grand Slam champion Osaka will return to Auckland after an eight-year absence and will be the seventh seed in the women's singles draw.

In her last appearance at the tournament in 2017, Osaka reached the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep will also play in Auckland thanks to a main-draw wildcard. The Romanian will contest at the ASB Classic for the first time since 2013. She also played in the tournament in 2011.

World No. 21 Madison Keys is the top seed at the 2025 ASB Classic, followed by second seed Elise Mertens, third seed Amanda Anisimova, and fourth seed Lulu Sun, who will be the local star at the event following her 2024 Wimbledon quarterfinal run. Two-time defending champion Coco Gauff and last year's runner-up Elina Svitolina will not be present at the tournament.
