"Even after I vomited twice, she still seemed to like me, so I knew she was a keeper": Andy Murray on wife Kim Sears

Andy Murray talked about his wife Kim Sears, during his tribute ceremony at Centre Court during the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. He recounted the moment he knew Sears was the woman for him and a "keeper."

Murray, who is potentially in his final season as a professional player and is expected to retire after the 2024 Paris Olympics, had withdrawn from the singles event at the ongoing Wimbledon Championships due to spinal surgery. However, he accepted a wildcard to play doubles with his brother Jamie and mixed doubles with Emma Raducanu.

Jamie and Andy Murray's doubles campaign ended in the first round after they were defeated by the Australian pair of Rinky Hijikata and John Peers 7-6(6), 6-4 in 88 minutes on Centre Court.

Following the match, Murray was honored by several stalwarts of tennis . A tribute video featuring Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Venus Williams, and others was also played.

Players like John McEnroe, Martina Navratilova, Conchita Martinez, Tim Henman, Djokovic, Iga Swiatek, and Holger Rune were present in the stadium to pay tribute to the former World No.1. British broadcaster Sue Barker, who retired from presenting in 2022, returned to host Murray's tribute ceremony.

During the interview with Barker, Andy Murray spoke about his wife, Kim Sears, who is the daughter of tennis coach Nigel Sears. They got engaged in 2014 and got married in 2015 at Dunblane Cathedral in Scotland.

Murray shared that he met Kim during the US Open in 2005 when they were both 18 years old. He shared that they had dinner at a restaurant in New York, and then had asked Kim for her e-mail address, which he now admits was a bit strange.

"We met for the first time when we were 18 years old. Kim’s dad is a tennis coach and we met over in New York and went out for dinner there at the US Open. I choked a little bit the first time we went out. We walked her home to her hotel and I asked her for her email address. I don’t think that’s a normal thing to do," Murray said [13:45].

The former World No.1 recalled that Sears first saw him play live at the US Open, where he had a tough match and vomited twice - once in front of her and once on his opponent's racquet bag. He revealed that he knew Kim was a "keeper" when she stayed with him even after his vomiting saga.

"The first match she came to watch me live was at the US Open. I actually vomited twice in that match. Once right in front of where she was sitting. I then stood up and vomited on my opponent’s racquet bag and she still seemed to like me so I knew she was a keeper after that," he added [14:29].

Andy Murray also praised Kim for being a "amazing support" to him, his family, and a wonderful mother to their four children, Sophia, Edie, Teddy and Lola.

"She’s been an amazing support to me and to my whole family and is the best mum. Unfortunately in a couple of months she's going to have to see me every day so things might be rocky for a little while but hopefully we can stick it out together. Yeah, Looking forward to the rest of our lives," Andy Murray said [15:01].
