Felix Auger-Aliassime and Gabriela Dabrowski win historic mixed doubles bronze medal for Canada at Paris Olympics 2024
Felix Auger-Aliassime and Gabriela Dabrowski created history at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The duo bagged Canada's first-ever mixed doubles Olympic medal after winning bronze in the Parisian capital on August 2.
Felix Auger-Aliassime and Gabriela Dabrowski paired up to play mixed doubles at their second Olympic Games after Tokyo 2020, where they exited in the first round. At Paris 2024, the Canadians did much better with gritty wins over Great Britain's Joe Salisbury and Heather Watson and third seeds from the USA, Taylor Fritz and Coco Gauff, to reach the semifinals.
They faced Katerina Siniakova and Tomad Machac of the Czech Republic in the semifinals and came up short in straight sets. As a result, Auger-Aliassime and Dabrowski headed for the bronze medal match against Demi Schuurs and Wesley Koolhof of the Netherlands. A single break of Schuurs' serve was enough for the Canadians to gain the one-set advantage.
Auger-Aliassime and Dabrowski maintained their level in the second set, breaking Koolhof and Schuurs' to quickly go up 3-0. But, the Dutch staged an impressive comeback to level the score 4-4, and the set went into a tiebreaker. The Canadians played the perfect tiebreaker to win the match 6-3, 7-6 (2) and take home the mixed doubles bronze medal.
This is Canada's second-ever Olympic medal in tennis after Daniel Nestor and Sébastien Lareau won the men’s doubles gold at the 2000 edition of the sporting event in Sydney.
Katerina Siniakova and Tomas Machac won gold while Zhang Zhizhen and Wang Xinyu of China bagged the silver medal to complete the mixed doubles podium at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Felix Auger-Aliassime reaches bronze medal match in men's singles at Paris Olympics
Felix Auger-Aliassime has a chance to win another medal for Canada at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He is seeded 13th in the men's singles draw and stitched an impressive run to reach the bronze medal match. The 23-year-old defeated Marcos Giron (USA), Maximilian Marterer (Germany), Daniil Medvedev (AIN), and Casper Ruud (Norway) to qualify for the semifinals.
Unfortunately, his run was ended by reigning French Open and Wimbledon champion and second seed Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals. The Spaniard completely outplayed the Canadian 6-1, 6-1 to reach the gold medal match. Auger-Aliassime will now battle it out against Lorenzo Musetti (Italy) for the bronze medal on August 3.
The two will lock horns for the sixth time, with the Canadian holding a 3-2 head-to-head lead.
