“Felt I was on that list” - Holger Rune questions his exclusion from the list of most wins by 2000s-born player ft. Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz
Danish tennis star Holger Rune recently questioned his exclusion from the list of most wins by a player born since 2000. Notably, he is one of the rising stars on the ATP tour and has been making waves at the 2024 Japan Open.
Rune advanced to the semifinals after overcoming challenges from two local favorites Kei Nishikori (3-6, 6-2, 7-5) in the quarters and Yoshihito Nishioka (6-2, 6-4) in the Round of 16. Earlier in the tournament, the sixth seed defeated Alejandro Tabilo Álvarez 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 to move to the second round.
Recently, Tennis TV, the official ATP streaming service, shared an interesting stat, posting the most wins by players born since 2000 on the tour. The list included the likes of Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Lorenzo Musetti.
Born in April 2003, Rune was notably absent from Tennis TV's stat, despite having the same number of wins (130) as Musetti on tour. In fact, the Dane had a higher win percentage, with 61 percent compared to the Italian's 55 percent.
After his exclusion from the list, Holger Rune commented on this post, suggesting that although he wasn’t keeping track of his wins but he believed that he should have been a part of the list, stating:
“Not counting but felt I was on that list as well @TennisTV”
With Rune already in the semifinals of the Japan Open, he would be aiming for his fifth title on the tour, having previously captured the Munich Open twice in 2022 and 2023, and the Paris Masters and Stockholm Open once in 2022. He is set to face France’s Arthur Fils in the semifinals scheduled later today.
“You need these big dreams that seem unrealistic”- Holger Rune emphasizes self-belief in achieving success
Holger Rune expressed immense self-belief in an interview with Olympics.com as he backed himself for future success. In an exclusive interview, the 21-year-old said:
“I think there's nothing called 'crazy' in tennis. You need to believe in yourself [and be] a little crazy. You need these big dreams that seem unrealistic for other people. But I believe in them. And that's the most important part: It doesn't matter what other people think because they're never going to achieve it. I think it's very important to dream big, and have people that believe in you and trust you.”
Some of Rune's notable performances this season have been reaching the quarters of the 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters and the semifinals of the Cincinnati Open. With his last four appearances at the Cincinnati Masters, he returned to the top 15, now occupying the 14th spot in the world.
