Holger Rune and coach Patrick Mouratoglou part ways, reflect on journey
Holger Rune and Patrick Mouratoglou have parted ways as player and coach after a six-month long association. Rune will continue to train at the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy but the French coach will not travel with Rune as his head coach going forward.
Both Rune and Mouratoglou reflected on their journey, expressing great admiration for each other.
The new development comes after the end of the North American hardcourt swing and ahead of the start of the clay-court swing. While Mouratoglou will not be part of Rune's coaching team, Mike James and Lapo Becherini, both of whom are coaches at the Frenchman's academy, will continue to work directly with Rune.
Mouratoglou looked back with fondness for his time working with the Danish youngster, lauding Rune for his energy while also expressing his confidence in Rune's future at the highest level.
"Holger! We've successfully completed our mission and ended up having an incredible 6-month adventure, exceeding our original plan of 3 months," Mouratoglou wrote on Instagram.
"It was a pleasure to share this journey with you. Your energy and enthusiasm made it even more special. I have no doubt that your bright future holds amazing things."
Mouratoglou, who has also coached Serena Williams and Simona Halep in the past, also said that he will continue to keep an eye on Rune's progress as the Dane continues to train at his academy.
"I remain your biggest fan and I keep an eye on you with the @mouratoglou_tennis_academy team, @holgerrune," he added.
Rune tasted the biggest success of his career so far with Mouratoglou as his full-time coach, winning the 2022 Paris Masters with wins over Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Andrey Rublev, among others.
"Great learning for me on many levels" - Holger Rune on his partnership with Patrick Mouratoglou
Holger Rune also reflected on his journey with Mouratoglou, thanking the Frenchman for his help. The 19-year-old highlighted that the partnership served as a great learning curve for him both on and off the court, and vowed to carry his learnings going forward. Rune is currently at No. 8 in the ATP rankings, his career-high ranking.
"Thank you so much for your help to the team, Patrick," Holger Rune wrote on Instagram. "It’s been great learning for me on many levels on and off court and a lot of good energy. I will take all your advise with me onwards. See you soon at the academy."
The Dane started his Sunshine Double campaign with a third-round loss at Indian Wells at the hands of three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka. He then had a better result at the Miami Open, but bowed out in the Round of 16 with a loss to American No. 1 Taylor Fritz.
