Holger Rune sends out warning ahead of Paris Masters 2024; comments on "repeating" 2022 glory
Holger Rune is gearing up for the 2024 Paris Masters scheduled to begin on Monday, October 28. He will be competing with some of the top players including Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Daniil Medvedev, in a bid for the title.
Rune had a breakthrough season in 2022. The Dane had entered the top 50 for the first time before entering the 2022 Paris Masters. He defeated five top 10 opponents in a row, including Novak Djokovic, in the finals to earn his first Masters 1000 title. In doing so, the Dane cracked the top 10 for the first time.
The then 19-year-old Rune also became the youngest player to win the Paris Masters since Boris Becker in 1986.
Earlier this week, the Paris Masters' official channel on X (formerly Twitter) shared a picture of the 2022 champion holding up the trophy. The picture was accompanied by a short clip of Rune's winning moment at the event. The post was captioned:
"5 Top 10 opponents, including world number one Alcaraz and Djokovic in the final, couldn't stop Rune from clinching his breakthrough Masters 1000 title."
Rune later re-shared the clip on his X account and wrote,
" Lets repeat this π― see you next week @RolexPMasters π«Άπ»"
Holger Rune reached the quarterfinals in the 2023 edition of the event, where he lost to the eventual title-winner Novak Djokovic. Notably, The 24-time Grand Slam champion has withdrawn from this year's Paris Masters.
Rune is currently competing at the 2024 Swiss Indoors Basel where he has set up a quarterfinal encounter with David Goffin.
Holger Rune will clash with David Goffin at Basel 2024 QF
Holger Rune will clash with David Goffin for a semifinal spot at the 2024 Swiss Indoors Basel. Fourth seed Rune will take on lucky loser Goffin in a highly anticipated encounter on Friday, October 25.
Rune entered the tournament at the back of a Round of 16 loss at the Shanghai Masters at the hands of Taylor Fritz. He overcame Nicolas Jarry, 6-4, 7-6(3) in the opening round in Basel. He next ousted Dominic Striker 6-3, 7-6(2) to reach the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, after a quarterfinal finish at the Shanghai Masters, David Goffin is having a stellar run in Basel so far. He defeated Yannick Hanfmann and Botic Van de Zanschulp to qualify for the main draw in Basel. He next rallied from a set down to defeat Matteo Arnaldi 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-2. Goffin next stunned fifth seed Ugo Humbert 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(7) to secure a quarterfinal spot.
This will be the duo's first on-court encounter.
