Holger Rune shares his feelings about joining Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz & Alexander Zverev as Grand Slam favorite in 2025
Holger Rune is one of the most promising tennis players in the world who has had a superb start to his rather young career. The Danish superstar peaked at number 4 on the rankings in 2023 before having a down year, dropping out of the Top 10.
Despite that, the Dane feels like he will be in the running for Grand Slams in 2025, as he told Eurosport during his appearance at the UTS Grand Final in London.
"I think Sinner has been a very complete player this year. Then, when Alcaraz is playing his best tennis, it also seems complete, but at the same time, I can see that they can improve in some areas. I hope to be there with them soon," he said.
Holger Rune has tremendous potential, which he has shown a couple of times. He's had a couple of deep runs at Grand Slams, making the quarter-finals, but he's yet to take the next step forward.
He's been doing a few things during this offseason to improve and has in the process, been looking up to Alexander Zverev as inspiration. The German has elevated his game to a new level during 2024, which is what Rune hopes to emulate.
"I just have to make small adjustments. I worked on some things at the exhibition event with Ruud and I'm also working on them here at UTS. If you look at someone like Zverev, he is a guy who has improved a lot lately. Before his injury, he was constantly in the top five, but he has improved again now and will be a great contender for the Grand Slams next year," Rune added.
Holger Rune's result at the UTS Grand Final in London was overall decent. He scored wins over Struff and Bublik in the group phase and then over Humbert in the semi-final. He lost to De Minaur in the final as well as the group stage, but still, the experimentation in his game is clearly yielding solid results so far.
Holger Rune on his plan of action to improve
Despite confessing earlier that his sudden rise to fame was premature, Holger Rune has a pretty clear idea of what needs to happen for him to take the next step. As he told Eurosport, he's worked a lot on his positioning on the court, which is vital in tennis.
"I've been working a lot on my position on the court and that's what I'm going to continue working on, because I've become a more dangerous player that way and [one] automatically stays there and keeps playing. Keep improving day by day Every day it is very important. To continue pushing the limits," he said.
His next stop will likely be Brisbane because he's not expected to take part in the Middle Eastern exhibitions before the season and he is officially part of the entry list for that event. After that, it's the Australian Open where Holger Rune has generally performed pretty well and that will be the first major test of what he's promised in the Eurosport interview - being competitive for Grand Slams.
