How much prize money did Ramkumar Ramanathan get after his first round at the 2024 Shanghai Masters?

Ramkumar Ramanathan could not qualify for the second round of the men’s singles in the Shanghai Masters 2024. On Thursday, October 3, he lost in straight sets to Alexander Shevchenko on Court 4. Shevchenko took an hour and 12 minutes to win the match 6-1, 7-6 (7-3).

In the second round, Shevchenko will be up against Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo. As far as Ramanathan is concerned, he won $23,250, the prize money for the players failing to go through to the second round of the tournament.

Had Ramathan defeated Shevchenko, he would have assured himself a prize money of $34,500. The winner of singles will get $1,00,000 while the runners-up will get $585,00. The semi-finalists and quarterfinalists will receive $325,000 and $185,000, respectively.

Ramkumar Ramanathan falters against Shevchenko

The opening set was one-sided as Ramanathan fell flat on his face. Shevchenko converted both the break point chances he was presented with. Most importantly, he did not give his Indian opponent a single opportunity to break his serve.

Ramanathan looked clumsy, making 15 unforced errors, a staggering 13 more than Shevchenko’s two. Shevchenko put pressure on Ramanathan with a win percentage of 87 (13 out of 15) from his first serves.

Ramanathan, however, looked in much better shape in the second set compared to the first. He did not let Shevchenko convert any of his two break-point chances. But Ramanathan would be gutted for not being able to earn a break despite getting four chances.

Ramanathan made 22 unforced errors, 14 more than Shevchenko, but made up for them with 17 winners to take the set into a tie-breaker.

At 3-3 in the tie-breaker, Ramanathan had the chance to drag the match into the deciding set. But Shevchenko won four points in a row to close the set and the match.
