How much prize money did Rohan Bopanna get despite losing in the mixed doubles semis of the US Open 2024?

Rohan Bopanna failed to make his way into the final of the US Open 2024 mixed doubles. On Tuesday, September 3, Bopanna and his partner Aldila Sutjiadi lost to USA’s Taylor Townsend and Donald Young at the Louis Armstrong Stadium. The American duo took 55 minutes to beat Bopanna and Sutjiadi 6-3, 6-4.

Bopanna and Sutjiadi will get $50,000, which is the prize money for the team to be knocked out in the semi-finals of mixed doubles. Had the Indian won, he would have assured himself a prize money of $100,000. The champion of the mixed doubles event will get a prize money of $200,000.

Earlier, Bopanna also could not advance beyond the third round of the men’s doubles while partnering Matthew Ebden. The doubles duo got a prize money of $63,000.

Bopanna and Sutjiadi go down fighting

Bopanna and Sutjiadi earned a break in the first set, but the American pair converted both their break point chances. In the second set, Bopanna and Sutjiadi had one chance of earning a crucial break, but could not convert it. Instead, they dropped their serve as Townsend and Young had the last laugh.

The American duo churned out 26 winners, 16 more than their opponents, and that turned out to be a deciding factor in the context of the game. Bopanna and Sutjiadi hit four aces, but were let down by the two double faults and a win percentage of 39 (seven out of 18) from their second serves.

With Bopanna’s exit from mixed doubles, India’s challenge in the US Open 2024 also ended. Earlier this year, the Indian veteran won the Australian Open men’s doubles title and became the oldest World No.1. Bopanna also got the prestigious Padma Shri for his incredible achievements over the years.
