Sumit Nagal struggles against Kotov in China Open
Nagal, ranked No. 83 in the world, could not find his feet against Kotov, who looked clinical throughout the match. Nagal dropped his serve three times in the opening set. Although he earned a break back, it was not enough for him to stay alive in the set.
The second set, however, was a tad more competitive than the first. Nagal kept Kotov on his toes and forced a tie-breaker. Thereafter, Nagal made it 5-5 before eventually throwing in the towel.
Nagal made 37 unforced errors, six less than his opponent. But Kotov pulled off 21 winners, 11 more than Nagal, to make the difference in the match. Nagal struggled both with his first and second serves.
The Indian recently pulled out of the Hangzhou Open after complaining of a back issue. He also did not take part in the Davis Cup tie against Sweden where India lost to Sweden 4-0. Nagal had also failed to go beyond the second round of the US Open 2024 men’s singles in August.
