Sumit Nagal fights but fails in US Open 2024
Sumit Nagal began the year by advancing to the second round of the Australian Open after beating Alexander Bublik. But since then, he failed to win first-round matches in the French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open. On August 26, he fought hard in the third set against Griekspoor but looked out of sorts in the first and second sets.
Griekspoor won 87 percent of points from his first serves to put Nagal under immense pressure. The Dutch tennis player also hit 10 aces to go with 32 winners. The six breaks of serve also undid Nagal he conceded to his opponent.
Despite losing the first two sets, Nagal earned himself a set point at 6-4 in the third set tie-break. But Griekspoor made a comeback to close out the set and the match with a backhand winner. Nagal lost four points in a row and failed to take the match into the fourth set.
Nagal, however, has a chance to make amends while partnering with Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka in the men’s doubles competition later. He and Nishioka will face the American duo of Robert Cash and James Tracy in the opening round.
