How much prize money did Sumit Nagal get after his first round at the 2024 Shanghai Masters?

India’s Sumit Nagal failed to make his way through to the second round of the Shanghai Masters 2024. On Wednesday, October 2, Nagal lost in straight sets to China’s Wu Yibing. It took Yibing an hour and 19 minutes to win the match 6-3, 6-3 at Stadium Court.

After crashing out, Nagal will get 23,250 US dollars, the prize money for the ones exiting in the first round of the tournament in singles. Had he won his first match, he would have assured himself a prize money of 34,500 US dollars.

The singles winner will get a prize money of 1,00,000 US dollars while the runner-up will return with 585,000 US dollars. The semi-finalists and quarterfinalists will get prize money of 325,000 US dollars and 185,000 US dollars, respectively.

Sumit Nagal goes down fighting

Sumit Nagal fought hard against Yibing in the first round but looked far from his best. He made a brilliant start by earning an early break to go 1-0 up in the opening set, but Yibing got the break back to make it 1-1. At 2-1, Yibing earned his second break and did not look back from thereon.

In the second set, Yibing got his third break of the match to go 2-1 up. Nagal held his serves from there on, but could not break his opponent’s serve. At 5-3, Yibing notched his fourth break to close out the match comfortably.

Yibing was decent with his first serves, winning 79 percent of points (22 out of 28) from them. He was tentative with his second serves, making four double faults, but made up for them with seven scorching aces.

The Chinese player also dictated terms to Nagal with 23 winners, a stunning 21 more than the Indian star. Nagal made eight unforced errors, six less than Yibing’s 14, but they could not save him from a defeat.
