Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden go down fighting

Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden comprehensively began their campaign after beating Brazil’s Marcelo Melo and Germany’s Alexander Zverev in straight sets. But the pair could not have the last laugh against Koolhof and Mektic despite putting their hearts in the match.

The first set turned out to be a nail-biting affair. Bopanna and Ebden faced a break point but managed to save it and take the set into a tie-breaker. Koolhof and Mektic were brilliant with their first serve, winning 93 percent of points (28 out of 30) from them. They were also excellent with their second serves after they won 75 percent of points (9 out of 12) from them.

In the tie-breaker, Bopanna and Ebden never allowed Koolhof and Mektic to take the upper hand with the scoreline reading 13-13. But then they lost two points in a row to go down.

Bopanna and Ebden also fought hard in the second set. But at 6-5, Koolhof and Mektic earned their first break of the match to go past the finish line. Before beating Bopanna and Ebden, they defeated the French pair of Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Arthur Fils.
