Novak Djokovic will earn $218,000 for winning gold at the Paris Olympics. The Serb became the Olympic champion for the very first time in his career in his fifth appearance at the sporting event.
Djokovic put up a fine performance against Carlos Alcaraz to win 7-6(3), 7-6(2) and win Serbia's second gold medal at the Paris Games, the first coming in shooting.
Before defeating Alcaraz, the 37-year-old triumphed over Matthew Ebden, Rafael Nadal, Dominik Koepfer, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Lorenzo Musetti, all in straight sets. He thus became the very first male tennis player in the Open Era to win an Olympic gold without dropping a single set.
Djokovic will receive prize money of $218,000 for his exploits in Paris, as according to Forbes, that is the amount Serbs will receive for winning gold at the quadrennial event. Additionally, the 24-time Grand Slam champion will also be eligible for a national pension that will start when he reaches the age of 40.
Novak Djokovic has won 19 out of 25 singles matches at the Olympics
Djokovic has played 25 singles matches so far at the Olympics, winning 19 of them. The Serb made his debut at the quadrennial games at Beijing 2008 and reached the semifinals after defeating Robby Ginepri, Rainer Schuettler, Mikhail Youzhny and Gael Monfils. Here, he lost to Rafael Nadal but beat James Blake to win the bronze medal.
The Serb then competed at the 2012 London Olympics and once again reached the semifinals, this time defeating Fabio Fognini, Lleyton Hewitt, Andy Roddick and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. This time, he lost 7-5, 7-5 to eventual gold medalist Andy Murray before missing out on the bronze medal after a defeat to Juan Martin del Potro.
The 2016 Rio Olympics was Djokovic's worst outing at the prestigious sporting event, as he was beaten by Del Potro in the very first round. The Serb reached the semifinals of Tokyo 2020 but lost to Alexander Zverev. He then suffered another defeat to Pablo Carreno Busta to finish fourth.
Djokovic will miss the upcoming Canadian Open but is on the entry list of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, where he is the defending champion.
