"I'd probably say Roger Federer, I'd just ask him what his mind goes through when he's out therecompeting" - Brandon Nakashima on who he'd like to be stuck in an elevator with
Roger Federer has been known to maintain his cool and exude calmness and composure on the court even when things don't necessarily go his way.
In an interview with Tennis Channel for their Warm and Fuzzy segment with Michael Costa, Brandon Nakashima was asked to name one person he would love to be stuck in an elevator with. The American was quick to choose Federer.
Brandon Nakashima said that he'd ask the Swiss what goes through his head when he is playing.
"I'd probably say Roger Federer. Being stuck in an elevator with him would be cool. I'd just probably ask him what his mind goes through when he's out there competing, just to see what he's thinking out there, how he's playing and stuff," Nakashima said.
Federer's influence has been huge for many of the young stars in the game. The likes of Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and others have waxed lyrical about how much they respect and admire the 20-time Grand Slam champion.
Michael Costa asked Nakashima when was the last time he felt surprised, to which the American said he was caught off guard when playing against Rublev. He stated that he was surprised at how hard the Russian hit the ball on the court.
"Couple of weeks ago I was playing a match, and, I was absolutely getting blown off the court, didn't know what to do out there. I was playing Rublev, he's the number 5 in the world now. I was just pretty surprised, how hard he was hitting the ball out there and it caught me a bit off guard," Nakashima said.
Roger Federer's impending return to action
Roger Federer recently announced that he will be participating in the 2022 Swiss Indoors in October using a protected ranking. The event was last held in 2019, when Federer emerged victorious for the 10th time. He has also confirmed his participation at the Laver Cup in September.
Federer has been sidelined ever since his quarterfinal loss to Hubert Hurkacz at Wimbledon last year. He has been dealing with a right knee injury since at least 2020 and has had three surgeries, leading his rankings to slip to 46th in the world.
During his absence from the tour, his eternal rivals Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic have continued to amass Grand Slam titles. The Spaniard has moved one clear of the Swiss maestro with 21, while the Serb has drawn level on 20.
Federer has been sporadically active on social media, teasing his recovery from a knee injury with videos on Instagram. He also worked with Hollywood legend Anne Hathaway in a commercial promoting tourism of his home country of Switzerland. He also visited Malawi to see the progress his foundation has been making.
