"I found it sexy" - Leylah Fernandez goes gaga over avocado-inspired Halloween outfit as she gears up for Billie Jean King Cup
Leylah Fernandez is set to participate in the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup Finals and represent Canada at the tournament for the fourth time in her career. Ahead of the main action, the former US Open finalist talked about her Halloween outfit and drew laughter from her fellow players.
Fernandez and star players from other participating teams attended the trophy presentation ceremony for the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup Finals. During the ceremony, the Canadian was asked about her now-famous 2024 Halloween outfit, and she did not shy away from the opportunity to lavish praise on her avocado-inspired fit.
Fernadez boldly claimed that she found her avocado outfit "sexy" and even called it the best outfit. The 22-year-old's honest response drew laughs from her peers Iga Swiatek, Taylor Townsend, Paula Badosa, Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, Tatjana Maria and 2024 Billie Jean King Cup Finals tournament director Conchita Martinez.
"I dressed up as an avocado. I found it sexy. I thought it was the best costume out there. You know, gotta go with the avocados of Mexico," Leylah Fernandez said.
Leylah Fernadez will be the star headliner for Team Canada at the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Malaga, Spain. She will be joined by recently crowned WTA Finals doubles champion Gabriela Dabrowski, Rebecca Marino and Marina Stakusic. Canada is the top seed in the tournament and will face either Germany or Great Britain in the quarterfinals.
Leylah Fernandez, Gabriela Dabrowski led Canada to Billie Jean King Cup glory in 2023
Team Canada is the defending champion at the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup Finals after winning their maiden title at the tournament last year. Fernandez, Dabrowski, Stakusic and Marino were joined by Eugenie Bouchard at the 2023 Billie Jean King Cup Finals, and they defeated Jasmine Paolini-led Italy in the final.
Canada reached the Finals stage this year without going through the qualifying stage as the defending champion. Leylah Fernandez was also part of the Canadian team that reached the Finals stage in 2021 and 2022. She will come to Malaga after ending her regular season at the WTA 250 Hong Kong Open, where she lost in the semifinals to eventual champion Diana Shnaider.
Fernandez represented Canada after other international tournaments during her young career. The former World No. 13 played at the Summer Olympics twice, losing in the second round in Tokyo (2021) and the third round in Paris this year. At the 2024 United Cup, Fernandez and Canada bowed out in the group stages.
