"I'm not going anywhere, Nick Kyrgios is here" - Aussie shares further progress on wrist injury recovery, announces possible US Open return

Nick Kyrgios recently provided an update on his recovery progress following a wrist injury. The Aussie also announced that he will potentially make a comeback at the 2024 U.S. Open

Kyrgios had a successful season in 2022, winning a doubles title at the Australian Open, finishing as a runner-up at Wimbledon, and reaching the quarterfinals at the US Open. However, a small tear in the lateral meniscus of his left knee led to arthroscopic surgery at the beginning of the 2023 season, causing him to miss several tournaments.

The former World No.13 then made a comeback at the 2023 Stuttgart Open but suffered a loss in the first round, falling to Yibing Wu 7-5, 6-3. During the tournament, he also tore a ligament in his right wrist which prompted him to pull out of the Wimbledon Championships, and since then has been out of the tennis circuit.

A myriad of injuries caused Nick Kyrgios to miss all four Grand Slam tournaments in 2023. He also missed the Australian Open, French Open and the Wimbledon Championships this season

Since being out of the tennis circuit, Kyrgios has been sharing updates on his recovery. Recently, he took to social media and shared a couple of videos of himself on a court, practicing under the lights.

Nick Kyrgios said that he had been waiting to be back on the practice courts for quite some time now. He expressed that during the recovery from his wrist injury, he had to fight "mental battles."

The Aussie said that despite the challenges he has persisted and will start practicing with players soon. He also revealed that he is aiming to make a doubles comeback at the 2024 U.S. Open which will be held from Aug. 26 to Sept. 8.

"Fearhand is back. Wrist surgery aint ending me. LETS FU**ING GO," Kyrgios wrote on his Instagram story.
"I can't explain how hard ive worked to get to this moment. Yall dont understand. The mental battles. The possibility of NEVER playing again. But im NOT going anywhere. Still got work to do. But KYGS is here.... Will be trying to get players to train with me the next 3 weeks with the possibility of US doubles...." he added.

Earlier this month, while speaking with the Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS) team, Nick Kyrgios expressed that his ultimate goal upon returning to the tennis court is to compete and "have fun" while doing so. He mentioned that he misses the thrill of "beating" opponents and the satisfaction of "winning:"

"My goal will be to get there, to compete, and have fun doing it. It’s been so long since I’ve played a match. I just want to go out there and remember the feelings that I used to feel. And just compete. At the end of the day, I love playing tennis. I’ve missed beating people, I miss winning."

Kyrgios mentioned his successful 2022 season and admitted to missing the competitive spirit and the joy of playing. He expressed that he wants to give his fans the opportunity to watch him play for at least a couple more years:

"And I was winning so much in 2022 before I had to stop. I barely lost. I want to get back out there and have that feeling and I feel that I want to give my fans one more year, or two more years, of the Nick Kyrgios experience."

According to Ultimate Tennis Showdown, Nick Kyrgios will play UTS this year, which is scheduled to take place in New York on Aug. 22 and 23.
