"I never want to play you again"- Amanda Anisimova hilariously addresses Jessica Pegula as she fights back tears after losing Canadian Open 2024 final
Amanda Anisimova was overcome with emotion when she lost her maiden WTA 1000 final at the 2024 Canadian Open to Jessica Pegula. The American, however, remained upbeat, making a hilarious remark about her one-sided rivalry with the champion.
Pegula, who was the 2023 champion in Canada, successfully defended her throne by beating compatriot Anisimova 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 in the title clash on Monday, August 12. With that, she lifted her third WTA 1000 title and sixth overall.
During her runner-up speech, Amanda Anisimova, who was fighting back tears, congratulated the World No. 6 for her continued reign.
"Oh God, I don’t think I’ve ever been this overcome with emotion at a speech. First off, I want to say congratulations to Jess," she said, addressing Jessica Pegula.
Interestingly, Monday’s win was Jessica Pegula’s third over Anisimova in their three-match rivalry. The latter, a remarkable ball striker, is considered a dangerous opponent by many.
She notably boasts a 5-2 win-loss record against former World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, who, herself, is known for her aggressive game style. In fact, Sabalenka was one of Anisimova’s victims during her inspired run to the final at the Canadian Open. Emma Navarro, Anna Kalinskaya, and Daria Kasatkina were the other three top players beaten by the American player en route.
After failing in her final hurdle despite her four consecutive top-20 wins, Amanda Anisimova hilariously conveyed to Jessica Pegula that she wishes to never face her again.
"I mean, you’re playing amazing tennis – I never want to play you again," she laughed, wiping off her tears.
"No really, you’ve been doing amazing and it’s really inspiring to see. Honestly, I’m really proud of everything you’ve been able to do. And just keep it up," she added.
Anisimova was keen on playing more finals but again voiced her reservations about facing her formidable compatriot.
"I mean... hope that we’ll be able to play many more finals, but yeah, it will be difficult," she said, hesitantly.
Amanda Anisimova after Canadian Open 2024 final against Jessica Pegula: "I just want to say I'm proud of myself"
In 2023, after her opening-round loss at the Madrid Open, Amanda Anisimova took an extended break from tennis, citing mental health concerns. She returned to the tour earlier this year at the ASB Classic in New Zealand but briefly dropped out of the top 400 in January. She was also forced to skip the Sunshine Swing due to a muscle injury.
Thanks to her Canadian Open campaign, the 22-year-old has made a spectacular return to the top 50. Giving herself a pat on the back during her runner-up speech, Anisimova said:
"I normally don’t do this, but I just want to say that I’m proud of myself. I feel like I’ve overcome a lot of things this year – from mental challenges to injuries – it’s not easy."
"I think just having a positive mindset and putting into the universe what you want you want to get out is the most important thing and that’s the only way you can make your dreams come true," she added.
