"I can't say what I want on TV" - Danielle Collins, a Taylor Swift fan, joins Martina Navratilova in condemning 'irresponsible' attack on pop icon
Martina Navratilova has slammed a writer for his 'misogynistic' article on Taylor Swift. A 'die-hard' Swiftie, Danielle Collins joined the former tennis icon in criticizing the writer for his opinions.
An opinion piece titled 'Taylor Swift Is Not a Good Role Model' was written by John Mac Ghlionn for Newsweek. Some arguments made in the article were labeled 'misogynistic' by Navratilova, and they also received criticism on social media.
One point in the article read that the public “must ask if [Swift’s] personal life choices are ones we want our sisters and daughters to emulate.” The writer justified his point by claiming "Swift remains unmarried and childless... it’s crucial to consider what kind of example this sets for young girls.”
Navratilova took to X and reposted a post that criticized the article. She wrote:
"A massive pile of misogynistic bull... This guy should be ashamed of himself and I can’t believe he writes for Newsweek…and they printed it. I mean…"
Navratilova and Collins spoke on the topic during a recent interview with Tennis Channel posted on X [3.30]. That was when the 30-year-old revealed she was a 'die-hard' Swift fan.
Navratilova continued the conversation and discussed how the Newsweek article gave "her [Swift] a hard time." The 67-year-old claimed that Swift was a great role model for young girls.
"By the way, she is a great role model because she has shown girls what can be done if you believe in something and you go for it," she said.
Collins, on the other hand, stated that she wanted to say much more to the writer for his article but she could not use that language on TV.
"I can't say what I want to say [to him] on TV... What a crazy, irresponsible article that that man wrote," Collins said.
Danielle Collins hopes to have children after she retires
After facing defeat against Iga Swiatek at the 2024 Australian Open, Danielle Collins revealed that she would be retiring from the sport by the end of the season. She mentioned that having children was her priority.
More recently, in an interview with BBC, Collins opened up about two chronic health conditions she was battling. The 30-year-old has rheumatoid arthritis and endometriosis.
Collins said "30-50% of women with endometriosis experience infertility." She believes that time is not on her side and expressed hope to get pregnant and have children in the small window that is available to her.
"...Time isn't on my side either... I have a smaller window available to get pregnant and to make sure that hopefully happens," Danielle Collins said.
Collins is currently competing at Wimbledon. She defeated Clara Tauson in the first round and Dalma Galfi in the second round to equal her best result at the tournament, having made the third round in 2019. She faces Beatriz Haddad Maia for a spot in the fourth round on Saturday.
