"I've done my job, let's see the football"- Carlos Alcaraz puts Wimbledon celebrations on the backburner to focus on Spain vs England Euro 2024 final
Carlos Alcaraz got the better of Novak Djokovic at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships final in straight sets. After the match, the Spaniard said he was gearing up to support his nation in the UEFA Euro 2024 final against England.
Alcaraz and Djokovic faced each other in a rematch of last year's Wimbledon final. The Spaniard got the better of the Serb in 2023 and history repeated itself as Alcaraz defended his title successfully with a 6-2, 6-2, 7-6(4) win in two hours and 27 minutes.
A Centre Court filled with celebrities and the Princess of Wales watched as the young Spaniard dominated the seven-time Wimbledon champion. He broke Djokovic twice in the first two sets to win them convincingly.
In the third set, the third seed was serving for the match at 5-4 with three championship points in hand at 40-0. However, Djokovic remarkably got himself out of the dire situation to break Alcaraz for the first time in the match. The set went into a tiebreaker which the 21-year-old overcame to become a two-time Wimbledon champion.
Alcaraz has spoken about Spain's football team during most interviews at Wimbledon due to the ongoing UEFA Euro 2024. The continental tournament concludes with the final between Spain and England.
During the on-court interview, the Wimbledon champion was asked where and with whom he would watch the match, which was set to kick off just hours later.
"[I will watch the match with] My team, for sure. I don't know what it's gonna be, but I [will] watch it for sure. I've already done my job, so let's see the football," Carlos Alcaraz said.
England are in their second consecutive UEFA Euro final. They lost to Italy on penalty shootouts last time out. This year, Spain is the only team with a 100% winning record. They are also the highest-scoring team in the tournament. The Three Lions will be vying for their first Euro trophy while Spain will look to win their fourth title.
Carlos Alcaraz becomes sixth man in the Open Era to win the Channel Slam
The Channel Slam, named after the English Channel, refers to the French Open and Wimbledon triumphs in the same season. Carlos Alcaraz, who got the better of Alexander Zverev early in June to win the 2024 French Open title, joined an elite list after winning the 2024 Wimbledon Championships.
When he was asked how he managed to achieve this feat, he said in the on-court interview:
"I think fighting, believing... It is a huge honour for me to be part of those players who have achieved Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same year."
He is now the sixth man in the Open Era to win the Channel Slam, joining Rod Laver, Bjorn Borg, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic.
