"I've got to support Novak Djokovic now, that'll be a first" - Andy Murray's mother Judy gives her verdict on Serb hiring her son as new coach
For much of her life, Judy Murray was supporting her son Andy Murray in his matches, and quite a few of those were against a certain player called Novak Djokovic. These two have battled it out for a good portion of their lives because they played against each other ever since they were juniors.
After years of scheming on how to beat each other, Djokovic and Murray will finally be working together as the latter was hired by the former as his coach. That of course implies that Judy Murray, as a proud mother who supports everything her son does, will have to support Novak Djokovic now, which she funnily admitted will be a first for her in her life.
“I’ve got to support Novak now. That’ll be a first. I mean that in the nicest way, of course.” - said Judy Murray to The Herald.
She's not the only one who's going to have to adjust to it because many people expressed surprise at the partnership when it was first announced. There are reasons to be excited about it if you're a tennis fan because it might just work, and Djokovic might just find his mojo back, which would make the 2025 season much more interesting.
Judy Murray further spoke on the partnership, admitting that she's known Djokovic for a very long time and that the Serb and Murray are well acquainted while stating that they're quite different characters.
“Well, they’re different characters. The first time I saw Novak was when they were playing in an under-12 competition in France. So, they’re part of each other’s furniture and they know each other really well on and off the court,” she stated.
Judy Murray expresses disappointment in Tennis Scotland
As someone who dedicated her entire life to tennis both as a coach and ambassador, Judy Murray currently isn't involved with tennis in her home country - Scotland. She's quite involved with the Saudi Tennis Federation at the moment, something which has drawn criticism as her son famously said that he would never play tennis over there.
As per what she told The Herald, the reason why she's not involved with Scottish tennis in any way is down to a lack of faith in the organization.
“I don’t have any confidence in the leadership of Tennis Scotland and that’s a major reason for me not to get involved in anything else here," said Judy Murray.
She further expressed disappointment that nothing was done to mark the achievements of both her sons, Andy and Jamie Murray, who have left an indelible mark on British and Scottish tennis.
"Even when it was the 10-year anniversary of Andy winning Wimbledon, they didn’t do anything, nor when he retired. But it’s never been about celebrating his achievements it was about using them to increase the profile of tennis in Scotland and the UK and reach communities that had previously been excluded. But what are they actually doing? They’ve now got around 20 full-time staff, but when they had a golden opportunity they dropped the ball spectacularly," she added.
The extent of her involvement in Scotland is basically down to just her doing some volunteering work with her local tennis club in Scotland, which sounds almost too simple for the likes of a respected tennis coach who has raised two superb tennis players.
