"I've lived it, I've fought against it" - Venus Williams emphasizes importance of financial freedom for women after launching new landmark initiative

Venus Williams looked back at her own journey while announcing the launch of her new initiative to boost financial independence for women. The American has teamed up with WNBA star Cameron Brink for the 'Give Her Credit' campaign.

Throughout her career, Williams has given her powerful voice to many causes, and her latest project to give women credit in their own name is no different. The 'Give Her Credit' campaign was launched in partnership with Brink and SoFi Bank, and it will award $500,000 to 50 individuals across the USA to support women’s financial freedom.

Venus Williams and Cameron Brink sat down for an interview with People Magazine to lay out their vision for the campaign. The American tennis legend reminisced on her journey towards financial independence and recalled how her parents, Richard and Orcene, pushed her and her young sister, Serena Williams, to be in control of their own finances.

Williams emphasized that she had been through tough times to get where she is and fought back against challenges on her road to financial independence. The 44-year-old added that the initiative resonated with her personally and she is excited to make it a success.

"I've lived it, I've fought against it, and this is something that really rings true to me, and I'm really excited to be here," Williams told People Magazine.

Cameron Brink heaped praises on Venus Williams during the interview while talking about the 'Give Her Credit' campaign. Brink met Williams two years ago in Miami, and the former remembered the kindness the 7-time Grand Slam champion showed in listening to her and making her feel "seen."

"She really takes the time to make people feel seen, that's what she did with me, and was just such an empowering person to be around. I've looked up to her for so long," Brink said.

Meanwhile, Williams gave her thoughts on the WNBA, saying she is a "huge fan" and pleased that the league is getting the attention and investment that it thoroughly deserves.

"It's just long overdue. Not only is it the right thing to invest in women's sports, but it's lucrative. It makes money not only for the women playing, but those who invest," Williams said.

On the tennis side, Williams is still active on the WTA Tour. Even though she has played limited tournaments due to injuries, the former World No. 1 hopes to prolong her illustrious career for at least one more year in 2025. She last played at the Miami Open in March 2024.
