"I wanted to heckle Jannik Sinner" - Travis Kelce shares thoughts on 'quiet' US Open final experience with girlfriend Taylor Swift
NFL star Travis Kelce attended the 2024 US Open men's singles final between Jannik Sinner and Taylor Fritz. Later, Kelce admitted that he had trouble with the 'quiet' atmosphere at the match as he is not a 'quiet person'.
Sinner and Fritz played the summit clash at the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday, September 8. Several celebrities from various industries were present in the stands with many supporting the first American man in a Grand Slam singles final in 15 years.
Travis Kelce and his girlfriend Taylor Swift were also supporting local lad Fritz. However, the Kansas City Chiefs star struggled with the 'quiet' atmosphere at the match. On his and his brother Jason Kelce's 'New Heights' podcast, Travis said:
“It’s [The tennis match was] very quiet and, you know us, when it’s very quiet we want to say something. I’m not a quiet person, I’ve never been a quiet person."
Kelce mentioned he wanted to heckle World No. 1 Sinner to help Fritz.
"The entire time I wanted to heckle the Italian, Jannik Sinner, the number one player in the world. And really try to get in his head to help my guy Fritzy out.”
Kelce refrained from heckling as he played it 'cool' and 'respectful'.
"I played it cool, I played it respectful, knowing that's kind of frowned upon. I'm sure if I started heckling like the guy did in Happy Gilmore [...] if it had gotten to that point, I'm sure I would've been asked to leave."
The evening, however, did not end well for the American supporters as Taylor Fritz lost the match in straight sets. Jannik Sinner earned back-to-back triumphs with the Cincinnati Open and the US Open title.
Travis Kelce enjoyed the music with girlfriend Taylor Swift during breaks at US Open final between Jannik Sinner and Taylor Fritz
During the 100th podcast episode with his brother Jason, Travis Kelce opened up about his overall experience of attending the US Open final between Jannik Sinner and Taylor Fritz. He claimed the only time he showed his 'personality' was when they played music during the breaks.
“I was very quiet. Except for intermissions when they were playing music. That was the only time I was really showing my personality,” Travis Kelce said.
Controversy also ensued when Taylor Swift hugged Brittany Mahomes, Patrick's wife, at the event. Brittany had reportedly liked a pro-Donald Trump post recently, and Swift had been outspoken against the former president.
She later endorsed Kamala Harris in a lengthy Instagram post, which was promoted by Andy Roddick and Martina Navratilova.
