"If I win on Sunday, most likely yes"— Carlos Alcaraz aims to add another commemorative tattoo if he defeats Novak Djokovic at Paris Olympics final
Carlos Alcaraz has a commemorative tattoo for each of his Grand Slam titles. He plans to add another if he wins gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he will face Novak Djokovic on August 4, 2024.
Alcaraz's first tattoo was the date of his 2022 US Open win near his right elbow. After winning Wimbledon in 2023, he got the date and a strawberry tattooed on his right ankle. Most recently, Alcaraz bagged his first French Open title in June. To commemorate this, he got the iconic Eiffel Tower tattooed on his left ankle along with the date of the win.
In his debut Olympics, Alcaraz reached the gold medal match without losing a set. He is in scintillating form but will come up against 24-time Grand Slam winner Djokovic in the final. It is the first Olympic final for both competitors.
During a post-match interview after his semifinal win over Felix Auger-Aliassime, Carlos Alcaraz told the media he is 'most likely' to get a commemorative tattoo if he wins gold:
"If I win on Sunday we'll see, but most likely yes. There's one small step left, a match that's a big mountain, but if I get it, I'll do it."
The Spaniard won Wimbledon for the second time a few weeks ago but the title has not received a commemorative tattoo due to Alcaraz's promise to his parents. During an interview with Tennis Channel after winning Wimbledon, he said:
"I told my parents, just to calm them, that it’s just the first one in every Major."
He added that he will have to discuss with them if he wants to ink the date for his second title with his first.
The Paris Olympics 2024 final will be the seventh meeting on tour between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic
Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic have faced each other six times before and are tied 3-3. They have played a final against each other three times and Alcaraz leads 2-1 with both his wins coming at Wimbledon.
Their last encounter came just a few weeks ago when they faced off at SW19. The 2024 final was a rematch of the 2023 final and the Spaniard managed to win both. In the 2024 Wimbledon Championships final, Alcaraz outclassed Djokovic in all areas to win 6-2, 6-2,7-6(4).
The gold medal match will take place on Sunday, August 4. Meanwhile, Italy's Lorenzo Musetti will take on Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime in the bronze medal match on Saturday, August 3.
