Iga Swiatek's new coach Wim Fissette's wife makes her feelings known on Belgian getting roped in to coach World No. 1
Iga Swiatek announced her new partnership with Wim Fissette today, and the Belgian's wife Jasmien Clijsner could not be more happy about the news. Swiatek's update comes just days after she split with her previous coach Tomasz Wiktorowski, marking the beginning of a new era for the five-time Grand Slam champion who is working with a non-Polish coach for the first time in her career.
Taking to social media on Thursday, Swiatek revealed to her fans that she and Fissette have concluded talks and decided to work together, giving special emphasis to his experience at the top level as one of the reasons she thought he was a good fit for her team.
"I said many times that my career is a marathon for me, not a sprint and I’m working, operating and making decisions with this approach. I want to say that I’m very excited and looking forward to working with Wim. He seems to have a great attitude, vision and huge experience at a very top level of tennis," Iga Swiatek said.
Fissette is among the biggest known names in the WTA coaching world, having worked with six former World No. 1s. Among them are Victoria Azarenka, Naomi Osaka and Simona Halep. Before joining Swiatek's team, Fissette was part of Osaka's entourage, with the pair breaking up just earlier this year after nearly one year together.
After the World No. 1's announcement, Fissette's wife took to Instagram to share the news, also expressing how proud she was to see her husband partner with the top-ranked women's tennis player in the world.
"Wim coaching #1 Swiatek. Extremely proud family in here," she added in the caption.
With the season nearly done, Swiatek and Fissette's first event together will be the WTA Finals in Riyadh, where the Pole is the defending champion.
Who will be joining Iga Swiatek at WTA Finals 2024?
At the 2024 WTA Finals, scheduled to start in the first week of November, Iga Swiatek will face a tough challenge. Qualified for the year-end championships alongside her are Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, Barbora Krejcikova, Elena Rybakina, Jasmine Paolini, Jessica Pegula and Zheng Qinwen.
Of those, Sabalenka and Krejcikova are reigning Slam champs, with the former winning the Australian Open and the US Open, and the latter winning Wimbledon. The other Slam of the year, the French Open, was won by Swiatek. Zheng, meanwhile, took home the Olympic gold in Paris.
