"Went to the dark side"
Amanda Anisimova's 2024 season has been a mix of challenges and breakthroughs. After a fourth-round exit at the Australian Open, she struggled with performance for much of the year. However, a resurgence began in Washington, where she made the quarterfinals, and continued in Toronto, where she delivered a standout performance.
The 23-year-old reached the Canadian Open final, defeating Aryna Sabalenka and making her first WTA 1000 final appearance. Despite this success, her tournament was overshadowed by a heated exchange with a social media critic.
Amanda Anisimova clapped back at a hater for questioning her ambitions
Amanda Anisimova reaffirmed her ambition to become the world's top-ranked women's singles tennis player following her impressive victory over Aryna Sabalenka in Toronto's 2024 National Bank Open quarterfinals. Referencing her re-entry into the world’s Top 100, she said at the Canadian Open:
"It's just small steps in the right direction to hopefully achieve the things that I want to be able to achieve, like winning a Grand Slam and becoming No. 1 one day, so, yeah, I hope that with all the training I do and staying healthy, I can get to that point."
When a critic on X (formerly Twitter) ridiculed her, calling her "overweight", Anisimova responded directly, defending herself and questioning the critic's priorities:
"Don’t you have anything better to do than comment on a 22-year-old’s body? Like do you have a job or friends? Damn dude trust me, I’m okay and I don’t think anyone here is asking for your advice lolz."
Anisimova's season concluded in October at the Wuhan Open, where she withdrew in the second round. The 23-year-old secured a huge jump in the rankings as she finished the year at World No. 36 after starting 2024 out of the Top 350.
