In Pictures: Jannik Sinner takes spotlight at ATP Finals; poses in Gucci as he lifts his maiden year-end World No. 1 trophy
Jannik Sinner took center stage at the 2024 ATP Finals as he was awarded the ATP year-end World No. 1 trophy. The Italian will finish the season on top of the rankings regardless of his results at the year-end tournament in Turin.
Sinner became the first ever Italian to become the year-end World No. 1. He has had a scintillating run this season, winning the Australian Open and the US Open, along with five other titles. The 23-year-old received the award in front of a rousing crowd at the Inalpi Arena on Monday, November 11. His family and tennis team were also present.
After being presented the award by ATP chairman Andrea Gaudenzi, Sinner posed for the cameras with his trophy sporting a casual Gucci T-shirt.
In another picture, Sinner can be seen raising the trophy high towards the crowd with a modest smile on his face.
Towards the end of the ceremony, the World No. 1 waved to the crowd walking off with his trophy sporting a pair of Nike Air Force shoes.
Sinner leads the leaderboard with 10,330 points, 3015 points ahead of second-ranked Alexander Zverev. The two-time Grand Slam champion became the 19th player in the men's category to claim the trophy. He is also just the fourth active player to do so after Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal.
"A very, very tough trophy to get" - Jannik Sinner on winning the ATP year-end World No. 1 title
Jannik Sinner acknowledged that the ATP year-end World No. 1 trophy is "very, very tough" to get and compared it to Grand Slam titles. The Italian opined that it takes consistent display throughout the year to claim the trophy.
"It’s a great competition between this and Grand Slams. This is a very consistent trophy. You have to play one year very consistent tennis, so this is for sure a very, very tough trophy to get," Sinner said as per ATPTour.com.
Sinner started his campaign at the ATP Finals with a 6-3, 6-4 win over seventh seef Alex de Minaur on Sunday, November 10. The round-robin encounter saw the Italian breeze past his opponent after just 85 minutes of play. With the win, he improved his head-to-head record against the Aussie to 8-0.
Jannik Sinner will next face Taylor Fritz, who comes on the back of a straight-sets win over Daniil Medvedev. This will be their fourth meeting on the tour, with the Italian leading 2-1.
