In Pictures: Naomi Osaka's baby daughter Shai joins her on shopping date in Tokyo; Osaka calls her a "natural fashionista"
Naomi Osaka is enjoying her extended stay in Tokyo with her baby daughter Shai. The Japanese tennis player shared highlights of her shopping date with the one-year-old, joking that her daughter is a “fashionista.”
Osaka called time on her 2024 season after abdominal and back injuries resulted in her pulling out of the WTA 250 event in Osaka, the WTA 500 event in Tokyo and the upcoming Billie Jean King Cup. Despite withdrawing from the tournaments in Japan, the 27-year-old stayed back in her home country, reveling in some downtime with her daughter.
The four-time Grand Slam champion shared endearing highlights of her day out with her child, from strolling through the streets of Tokyo to visiting the Louis Vuitton store.
Naomi Osaka also joked that Shai is in the driver’s seat when it comes to her shopping choices.
"I let Shai pick when we go shopping, and I can’t decide between two things," she said on Instagram.
Osaka hinted that she and her daughter have similar tastes and called her a “natural fashionista.”
"She hasn’t missed so far Natural fashionista lol," the former World No. 1 quipped.
Naomi Osaka on how life changed after giving birth to daughter Shai: "I just feel like I don't have time to waste"
Naomi Osaka and her longtime boyfriend, rapper Cordae, welcomed their first daughter, Shai, in July 2023. The player resumed her tennis career at this year’s Brisbane International following her maternity break.
She sits just outside the world’s top 50, ranked No. 56, with her best result being the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 in Doha. On Good Trouble with Nick Kyrgios earlier this year, Osaka touched on juggling motherhood and her tennis career.
"I just feel like I don't have time to waste. I'm trying to be really efficient with everything. When I was younger, I could hit for three hours and waste time in the middle or whatever but now I know that someone's waiting for me at home and I have to take care of her so I just feel like every second counts," she said.
Naomi Osaka also remarked on her newfound respect for her mother after giving birth to her own child.
"I talk to my mom a lot, and I appreciate her way more now that I'm a mom, and I'm going through the feelings that she was going through like a mom's job is never over," she added.
