Is Frances Tiafoe playing without a coach at Wimbledon 2024? All you need to know about the American's team set-up
Frances Tiafoe is currently in action at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, where he has reached the third round. After beating Matteo Arnaldi and Borna Coric in the opening two rounds, the American came head-to-head with defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the third round.
Interestingly, the American is playing at SW19 without a full-time coach in his team. For three years between 2020 and 2023, Tiafoe worked with former top 10 player Wayne Ferreira, but split up with him at the end of the season by mutual consent.
The former World No. 10 began the 2024 season with Diego Moyano at the helm of his team instead. Moyano is a former USTA coach, who had helped train Tiafoe in the past, along with the likes of Tommy Paul and Reilly Opelka.
"Just wanted to say thanks to this guy. Three years we shared together...SHEESH we had a ton of success. But sadly we've decided to part ways. Thanks for getting me to the player I am today. Nothing but love and respect for you," Frances Tiafoe said on social media.
"Happy to announce I’m starting my 2k24 with @diegoamoyano coaching me. It’s a full circle moment from you helping me back at the Usta days to now privately. Im excited for what’s to come," he added.
However, Tiafoe and Moyano's partnership did not last, as the pair split up in April, just four months in.
“It’s time for a new chapter!” Moyano wrote on Instagram. “@bigfoe1998 and I have decided to part ways. I’m grateful for the opportunity to have coached such a talented player and even more [of a] better person. I have no doubt that you’ll continue to shine in your tennis career, and I’ll be cheering you on every step of the way.
At the start of the clay swing, Tiafoe worked with Zina Garrison, former captain of the United States Billie Jean King Cup team, as his interim coach. However, she did not want to become a full-time coach, resulting in the American traveling to Wimbledon on his own.
Speaking about the decision during his time at SW19, Tiafoe shed light on the type of coach he wants to hire next, stating that he would prefer to have a former top 10 player who has Grand Slam experience under their belt.
The 26-year-old was of the opinion that he would benefit from such experience, adding that he felt himself capable of contending for Grand Slams in the near future, for which he would need a coach of that calibre.
"I mean for a guy like me, for what I have already done and have achieved in my career, I want a guy who has also done or coached at a high level. Who has experience of going deep in slams, been top 10, coached guys top 10 or coached guys to win a slam, because that’s where I want to be," Frances Tiafoe said in his press conference.
“I want to be contending in a lot of these weeks, getting back to the top of the game and contending for majors, because that’s what I feel I’m capable of," he added.
As of last year, Frances Tiafoe was also working with Frank Costello as his fitness coach and Bret Waltz as his strength & conditioning coach.
Carlos Alcaraz puts an end to Frances Tiafoe's Wimbledon 2024 campaign
Frances Tiafoe's Wimbledon 2024 campaign came to an end on Friday, as he ended up falling to Carlos Alcaraz in the third round in an epic five-setter. The American was leading by two sets to one, but eventually lost 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, 6-7(2), 2-6 on Center Court.
Tiafoe had lost in the third round at WImbledon last year as well, and will not suffer too big of a points drop as a result. The American is already set to miss the upcoming Paris Olympics, and will be in action next at the North American hardcourt swing.
