As far as tennis is concerned, the World No. 39 has not been able to hit the ground running yet in the new season. After an injury-ridden 2022 season, Fernandez started her campaign in 2023 at the ASB Classic in Auckland. Despite being the third seed in the tournament, she could not endure a deep run as she failed to get past the third round.

Fernandez crashed out in the second round of the Australian Open, losing to defending WTA Finals champion Caroline Garcia. Earlier, Fernandez beat Alize Cornet 7-5, 6-2 in the opening round.

She then played at the Abu Dhabi Open. After registering a couple of comprehensive wins in the qualifiers, Fernandez bowed out in the first round of the main draw. The Canadian lost to Shelby Rogers 6-4, 6(5)-7, 6-1 in three sets.
