"It's really funny" - Sebastian Korda-conqueror Tomas Machac jokes about being called the 'shorts king' after defeating American in US Open 2R
Tomas Machac scored a big win at the 2024 US Open, taking out 16 seed Sebastian Korda in the second round. He was in control of the contest and took the match in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, 6-4.
The intense contest, however, was followed by light banter during his on-court interview. Machac, who is known to wear short-length tennis shorts, was asked about his unique fashion choice.
The Czech in response said he had, in fact, jokingly been called the “shorts king” by some of his colleagues. He, however, was quick to add that he only chooses to wear them for comfort and has no intention of making a fashion statement.
“Yeah some people told me I am the shorts king," Tomas Machac said. “It’s really funny. But really I cannot play with long shorts because it’s not comfortable for me. So I play like this. I don’t know if it’s nice or not but it’s a new trend for me, huh?”
Later reflecting on his performance in the contest, Machac said the playing conditions were great and both he and his opponent started the match off well. He said he did spot Sebastian Korda shake his head mid-match, hinting at some discomfort, but decided to focus on his own game to help him get over the line.
“Yeah, it was a pretty difficult match because I was playing a solid match, and Sebi was playing well I think from the beginning, good conditions and everything. And at the beginning of the third set, I saw him shaking his head,” Tomas Machac said.
“So yes maybe some pain, but afterwards, he was fighting so much and playing like, without any pain. So I refocus and start to play my tennis again, but I think the match was great today,” he added.
"Play your game, believe in yourself" - Tomas Machac after ousting Sebastiann Korda in US Open 2R
Tomas Machac had come into the 2024 US Open with a mediocre season in the men's singles so far. He has, however, managed to turn things around for himself with the win over Sebastian Korda.
Addressing the turnaround, Machac said he continued to put in the work and believe in himself without focusing too much on the results.
“I mean, you just focus on the preparation and your game and the results hopefully sometimes come,” Tomas Machac said.
“So I just believe in myself and I wasn't playing actually good before this tournament, but I make two matches with six straight sets so you never know what happens. So just fight and play your game and believe in yourself,” he added.
Machac will next take on either David Goffin or Adrian Mannarino for a place in the US Open fourth round. He has never made it to the second week of a Grand Slam in the singles in the past.
