"Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are the best, doesn’t mean I won’t believe in myself" - Nick Kyrgios makes bold declaration ahead of 2025 return
Nick Kyrgios is set to return to tennis in the 2025 season with renewed confidence. The Aussie is determined to back himself, even against tough competition from top players like Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.
The former World No. 13 was sidelined by a series of injuries since the 2022 US Open quarterfinals. A knee injury forced him to withdraw from the 2023 Australian Open and later kept him out of the French Open.
Kyrgios returned to grass at Stuttgart in June 2023, playing just one match and losing to Wu Yibing before a torn ligament in his wrist required surgery. That season marked a challenging period for the 29-year-old who is currently competing at the World Tennis League exhibition event in Abu Dhabi and is optimistic about the upcoming season.
"There’s no doubt that Sinner, Alcaraz — these guys are the best in the world right now, hands down. But that doesn’t mean I won’t believe in myself. I’ll always back myself and do everything I can to compete.," he said" he said while speaking to Telecomasia.
The 2024 World Tennis League kicked off on Thursday, November 19, at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. The tournament follows a round-robin cum knockout format, with the top two teams from the Eagles, Falcons, Hawks, and Kites advancing to the final on December 22.
Nick Kyrgios recently reacted to his possible boxing bout with Jannik Sinner
Nick Kyrgios has often challenged the rulings favoring players like Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner in their doping rows. Moreover, the Australian repeatedly accused authorities of showing preferential treatment.
Sinner tested positive for the banned substance Clostebol during his BNP Paribas Open campaign in March. The Italian was provisionally suspended but successfully overturned the decision, explaining that the substance entered his system during treatment by his physiotherapist. Additionally, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) determined that the amount of the substance in his system was negligible and they found no evidence of wrongdoing, allowing him to resume competition.
A fan on X recently shared an AI-generated image of Sinner and Kyrgios in a boxing ring, expressing they would sacrifice their kidney for this match to happen.
"I would sacrifice a kidney to make this happen," they wrote.
Kyrgios, had a hilarious response of his own, asking:
Hahaha in the ring? What y’all smoking
