Jannik Sinner easily beats Taylor Fritz to win maiden US Open title as 21-year drought for American men at Grand Slams continues
Jannik Sinner won his second Grand Slam title on Sunday, easily getting past American No. 1 Taylor Fritz in the final of the 2024 US Open. The Italian got the job done in straight sets, following up his triumph at the Australian Open earlier this year with his second Major trophy of the season.
Sinner started strong on the night under the lights in Arthur Ashe Stadium, breaking early against a nervy Taylor Fritz to go 2-0 up. The World No. 12, however, quickly earned the break back to restore parity, making it 3-3. The nerves still prevailed for the American, who lost his next service game to hand the set 6-3 to the No. 1 seed.
The second set saw a more composed Fritz, who remained on pace with Sinner until 4-4. Unfortunately, a late break of serve in an error-prone game was enough for the World No. 1 to seal the set, taking it 6-4 to move within a set of the championship title.
In the third set, Sinner was three break points down in the very first game but managed to hold serve by winning five points in a row after that. Similarly, Fritz faced two break points at 2*-3 15-40, but managed to hold his serve with four points in a row.
At 3*-3, Fritz managed to get ahead in the set, breaking the Italian's serve after two inspired rallies. Two double faults in the next game notwithstanding, the World No. 12 consolidated to extend his lead to 5-3. Serving for the set at 5*-4, however, Taylor Fritz faltered and allowed Sinner to restore parity at 5-5.
With Sinner then holding serve and the American serving to stay in the match, nerves struck again for Fritz as he quickly went down 0-30. At 15-*40, Sinner converted his first championship point to close out the match after two hours of play in New York.
Following Fritz's loss, Andy Roddick remains the last American man to have won a Grand Slam title (at the 2003 US Open), extending the 21-year-old drought in Grand Slams.
Jannik Sinner now only the third man this century to win both Australian Open and US Open in the same year
With his win at the 2024 US Open, Jannik Sinner has become only the third man in the 21st century to win both the Australian Open and the US Open in the same calendar year.
The two other men who have achieved the record are Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. Federer has done it thrice: in 2004, 2006 and 2007. Djokovic has also done it thrice so far: in 2011, 2015 and most recently in 2023.
