Jannik Sinner makes massive jump to leave Carlos Alcaraz behind after $2.1M bounty from Australian Open win
Jannik Sinner surpassed Carlos Alcaraz in highest career prize money earned, after claiming the whopping prize purse of US $2,198,928 (AUD $3,500,000) by winning the 2025 Australian Open. Sinner defended his title at the Grand Slam tournament this year, having previously won it in 2024 by defeating Daniil Medvedev in the final.
Sinner was the top seed at the Melbourne Major and he defeated the likes of Nicolas Jarry, Australian wild card Tristan Schoolkate, Marcos Giron and 13th seed Holger Rune in the first four rounds. He continued his winning streak by triumphing over eighth seed Alex de Minaur in the quarterfinals and 21st seed Ben Shelton in the semifinals, ultimately securing a spot in the final.
In the championship match, Jannik Sinner defeated second seed Alexander Zverev with a score of 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3 to clinch the 2025 Australian Open title and claim his third Grand Slam title overall.
On the other hand, Carlos Alcaraz was seeded third at the Grand Slam tournament and he defeated Alexander Shevchenko, Yoshihito Nishioka, Nuno Borges, and Jack Draper before losing to Novak Djokovic 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 4-6 in the quarterfinals.
Following his title triumph at the 2025 Australian Open, Jannik Sinner earned a prize purse of US $2,198,928 (AUD $3,500,000), while Carlos Alcaraz received US $418,211 (AUD $665,000) for reaching the quarterfinals.
With this victory, Sinner surpassed Alcaraz as the eigth highest career prize money leader, accumulating a total of US $39,389,088, which is US $1,125,536 more than Alcaraz who has earned US $38,263,552.
Among active players, only Novak Djokovic (US $186,217,004), Alexander Zverev (US $51,715,361) and Daniil Medvedev (US $45,249,858) have more prize money than the World No.1.
Jannik Sinner on winning Australian Open 2025: “It means so much to me, it's a lot of work we put behind this one”
While speaking to the press after winning the 2025 Australian Open, Jannik Sinner pointed the difference between winning the first and the second Grand Slam title of his career.
Sinner said that despite the difference, every win makes winning the title "very, very special."
“The first one is more kind of relief. It gives you the [knowledge] that you can do it if you play some great tennis. The second one, this one, maybe you enjoy it a bit more because it's different. But every Grand Slam, or every tournament you win, or you go far, it has its own story. You have to pass difficulties and this makes it very, very special,” Jannik Sinner said.
The World No.1 expressed that winning the Melbourne Major means a lot to him as it signifies all the hard work him and his team have put in together. He also thanked the fans for their support throughout the tournament.
“It means so much to me . It's a lot of work we put behind this one . It means a lot to have this one now two times with me, and the support has been amazing from the start of the tournament. The crowd has been amazing from the beginning of the of the tournament, honestly. Also the week of preparation, I got a lot of support. That's maybe what means the most to me,” he added
Jannik Sinner has won three Grand Slam titles to date, all on hard courts, which includes back-to-back Australian Open victories in 2024 and 2025, as well as a title triumph at the 2024 US Open where he defeated Taylor Fritz in the final.
