Jasmine Paolini reaches her 2nd final at French Open 2024 in 2 days as Italian and Sara Errani book spot in women's doubles final
Jasmine Paolini has continued her splendid run at the 2024 French Open by reaching her second final at the Grand Slam. The Italian has now reached the final of the women's doubles category just a day after entering the final of the women's singles.
Paolini partnered with compatriot and veteran Italian star Sara Errani, five-time Grand Slam doubles champion, to play women's doubles at Roland-Garros. The duo has been regular partners since the start of 2024 and emerged as among the best team on tour. They have won the WTA 500 Linz Open and WTA 1000 Italian Open, with the latter one coming in the run-up to the Claycourt Slam.
In Paris, Paolini-Errani were seeded 11 and defeated Irina Khromacheva-Timea Babos, Bernarda Pera-Magda Linette, Amina Anshba-Anastasia Detiuc, and Emma-Navarro-Diana Shanider to reach the semifinal. The Italian pair faced off against Elena-Gabriela Ruse and Marta Kostyuk for a place in the final on June 7.
Ruse-Kostyuk were off the mark quickly in the semifinal contest and raced to take a one-set lead. Paolini-Errani were much more precise in the second set to level the score. The Italian pair turned screws on the Romanian-Ukrainian pair in the third set to oust them from the tournament, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1.
With this win, Errani and Paolini secured their spot in the women's final at the 2024 French Open. While Errani is a former Roland-Garros doubles champion (2012), this will be Paolini's first women's doubles final at a Grand Slam.
The occasion was made even more special as it came just a day after Paolini reached her first Grand Slam singles final in Paris. She achieved the major career milestone after she bettered teenage Russian prodigy Mirra Andreeva 6-3, 6-1 in the women's singles semifinal on June 7.
Jasmine Paolini to face Iga Swiatek in French Open 2024 women's singles final
Jasmine Paolini will face the world's best women's player in the biggest match of her career so far when she comes up against top seed and two-time defending champion Iga Swiatek in the French Open final on June 8. The Italian is seeded No. 12 and has had enough game time en route to the title contest, playing three three-set matches.
The 28-year-old began her campaign with relatively straightforward wins against Daria Saville and Hailey Baptiste. She was taken to task in her next three matches but ultimately survived the stern challenges of former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu, Elina Avanesyan, and No. 2 seed Elena Rybakina before her straight sets win over Mirra Andreeva.
Jasmine Paolini is set to rise to the top 10 of the WTA Ranking for the first time in her career after reaching the French Open final. She has had a fantastic 2024 with a title at the WTA 1000 Dubai Tennis Championships and a fourth round finish at the Australian Open.
