"Just sad to see someone who's let themself go like Roger Federer has" - Andy Roddick sarcastically jokes about Swiss' 'unkempt' look at Laver Cup
Andy Roddick recently put his trademark sense of humor on display, sarcastically poking fun at Roger Federer's enduring fitness even after retirement. The Swiss legend is currently enjoying his time at the 2024 Laver Cup in Berlin.
As Team Europe attempts to snap Team World's two-year winning streak at the Laver Cup, Federer has been cheering on Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and the rest of the European contingent at the event.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion was recently spotted enjoying a lighthearted moment with Grigor Dimitrov and Alcaraz in the gym, dressed casually in a white t-shirt, gray pants and a beige jacket.
Reacting to the clip on the Tennis Channel, Andy Roddick joked that it was sad to see how the 43-year-old had "let himself go" in retirement, despite him looking as fit as ever. Roddick continued to poke fun at the Swiss' appearance, sarcastically remarking that Roger Federer looked "completely unkempt" and no longer owned any collared shirts.
"It's just sad to see someone who's let themself go like Roger has. Just look at this, completely unkempt, t-shirt, guy doesn't even own a collar anymore. It's just sad to see," Roddick said.
Despite their fierce rivalry during their playing days, the 20-time Grand Slam champion and Roddick have been nothing but complimentary about each other since hanging up their rackets. During a recent appearance on the Tennis Channel, Federer hailed the American as a "great guy" and expressed his appreciation for Roddick's "fun" podcast.
"Andy is a great guy he knows it. He's the best and I love his podcast as well and I want him to do commentating. He's so fun to listen to he's so knowledgeable and always enjoyed having him around on the tour and stuff so whenever I hear Andy Roddick, I get a smile on my face," he said.
In response, Andy Roddick extended an invitation for the 43-year-old to be a guest on his podcast, joking that it was the "least he can do for me throwing all those Wimbledon finals."
"Roger Federer's ease of operation, it just drove me crazy" - Andy Roddick on still being 'jealous' of Swiss
During a recent episode of the Served with Andy Roddick podcast, Roddick disclosed that he didn't have many regrets about his career and emphasized his admiration for Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic's unmatched achievements.
Neverthless, the American admitted that he always felt, and continues to feel, "jealous" of Federer due to their battles on the biggest stages of the sport and the "ease" with which the Swiss legend operated.
"I don’t have a lot of regrets. I don't envy people for their successes. I am more than happy that these 3 (Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic) have won all of the tournaments that they've won. I was very jealous and still jealous of Roger because he was the guy I played most in the biggest matches," Roddick said.
"Just because we were good on the same surfaces at the same time was his ease of operation, it just drove me crazy. Because I could see him on the Saturday before Grand Slam losing to some chucker on our practice court and I walked by and he was smiling, laughing," he added.
Roger Federer and Andy Roddick locked horns in 24 tour-level encounters, with the 20-time Grand Slam champion winning all but three of those matches. The Swiss also emerged victorious in all eight of their encounters at the Majors, including four Grand Slam finals.
