Kate Middleton & daughter Charlotte turn heads at Djokovic-Alcaraz Wimbledon final in the Princess of Wales' 1st major appearance amid cancer battle
The final day of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships saw the Princess of Wales Kate Middleton in attendance, marking her first major appearance at a public event since her cancer diagnosis earlier this year. Kate Middleton was joined at SW19 by her daughter, Princess Charlotte, to watch Novak Djokovic take on Carlos Alcaraz in the men's final.
Middleton announced to the world that she was battling with cancer in March, and has since been undergoing chemotherapy. The type of cancer has not been made known to the general public. She has also kept out of the public eye for the most part, even sacrificing some very prominent ceremonial duties that come with part being a member of the Royal Family.
The former Duchess of Cambridge has become synonymous with Wimbledon in recent years, presenting the men's and women's singles winner with the trophies. In 2024, however, Middleton opted not to attend the women's final on Saturday, where Barbora Krejcikova beat Jasmine Paolini to win her maiden title at the grass Major.
For the Sunday final between Djokovic and Alcaraz, on the other hand, Middleton made sure to attend, and delighted the crowd with a purple gown. Her daughter Charlotte also wore a similar gown, opting for a dark blue one instead of matching her mother.
A loud cheer went around Center Court when the Princess of Wales finally took her seat in the Royal Box a few minutes before the final kicked off, with fans showing their appreciation for Wimbledon's patron with as much enthusiasm as possible.
Interestingly, former US Open champion Emma Raducanu, who exited the tournament in the Round of 16, also made a comeback to Wimbledon and greeted Middleton upon her arrival.
Carlos Alcaraz beats Novak Djokovic in front of Kate Middleton to defend Wimbledon
With Princess of Wales Kate Middleton watching on, Carlos Alcaraz dismantled Nvoak Djokovic on Centre Court to win his second title at Wimbledon. By doing so, the Spaniard defended his title at the tournament, also winning his fourth Grand Slam trophy.
After losing the first two sets 2-6, Djokovic made it closer in the third set, taking it to a tiebreaker. However, it was not enough to beat the Spaniard on the night, who prevailed 6-2, 6-2, 7-6(4) to become the first man from Spain to win back-to-back titles at the Grass Major.
Alcaraz also completed the Channel Slam with his win on Sunday -- winning both the French Open and Wimbledon titles on the trot in the same Calendar year.
