Maria Sharapova makes hilarious quip after her tense reaction to watching US Open women's SF goes viral
Maria Sharapova attended the 2024 US Open semifinal between Aryna Sabalenka and Emma Navarro. The official cameras caught her looking tense, and she jokingly responded to her expressions afterward.
The US Open's official X account posted a video of the retired Russian tennis star announcing her presence at Arthur Ashe Stadium. However, Sharapova looked nervous in that video and she reposted it with a humorous caption reminiscing her playing days.
"😅 I look like I just missed a second serve return on break point and saw my coach’s reaction 😆"
On Thursday, September 5, Sharapova was in New York to attend the US Open's second annual 'Champions of Equality' event. It was a celebration of women who have fought for equality in sports and entertainment with Shonda Rhimes and Billie Jean King also in attendance.
Later, Sharapova attended the women's singles semifinal between Sabalenka and Navarro at the Arthur Ashe Stadium with her fiance Alexander Gilkes. The Belarusian advanced to her second straight US Open final with a win over the American 6-3, 7-6(2). She will take on Jessica Pegula on Saturday, September 7, in the championship match.
Maria Sharapova won the 2006 US Open title defeating Justine Henin in the final
Maria Sharapova has made 13 main draw appearances at the US Open in her career spanning almost 20 years. She reached the final of the event only once in 2006 and won it against Justine Henin 6-4, 6-4. Her US Open title came two years after she created a huge buzz by defeating Serena Williams in the Wimbledon final as a 17-year-old in 2004. She knew at the time she was destined for more greatness.
"Absolutely incredible. The first thing that comes into my mind when, you know, you go down on the ground and you just think of everything that you've put into this moment, and even though the moment is a very short time you get to be on court with that trophy, it's just so incredible," Maria Sharapova said after winning her US Open title.
"You know, I experienced it two years ago, and I knew that I wasn't done, I had a lot more in me. That was just the beginning. This is not just preparation that happened a couple weeks before the tournament; this is preparation that I've done ever since I was a little girl with the help of my amazing family."
Sharapova reached the semifinal of the New York Major twice but could never replicate her 2006 triumph. She held a 38-12 record at the US Open with a win % of 76.
