Martina Navratilova agrees President Donald Trump will pardon controversial January 6 'insurrectionists': "He wants to be the hero"
Martina Navratilova has agreed with former US government official and author Juliette Kayyem's prediction that President-elect Donald Trump will pardon those responsible for the January 6 US Capitol attack in 2021 because he "wants to be the hero." The attack stemmed from then-President Trump's claim that he had been unfairly defeated by Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential elections and asking supporters to "fight like hell", leaving five dead and 174 police officers injured.
A week later, Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives for incitement of insurrection. Kayyem took to X (formerly Twitter) on December 2 and wrote:
"I need to tell you something: Trump is going to pardon the January 6th insurrectionists regardless of a Biden pardon of his son. I don't know why people don't listen to Trump. He's an open book."
The 18-time Grand Slam champion agreed:
"Of course he is. He wants to be the hero."
At the beginning of 2024, Navratilova labeled Trump a liar over his remarks about a congressional committee.
Martina Navratilova criticized Donald Trump after he controversially alleged January 6 congressional committee had illegally destroyed evidence
On the first day of 2024, Donald Trump stirred controversy after sharing a post on Truth Social, his social media platform. He wrote regarding Representative Liz Cheney, who served on the January 6 US Capitol Attack House Select Committee:
"Why did American Disaster Liz Cheney, who suffers from TDS (Trump Derangement Syndrome), and was defeated for Congress by the largest margin for a sitting Congressman or Congresswoman in the history of our Country, ILLEGALLY DELETE & DESTROY most of the evidence, and related items, from the January 6th Committee of Political Thugs and Misfits."
Responding to several such posts, a user on X asked if Trump was "nuts". Martina Navratilova replied:
"Not nuts. Just a lying piece of trash."
The Czech-American tennis legend shared her disappointment after Trump won the 2024 elections. She had endorsed Kamala Harris for President.
